This collection contains meeting minutes, correspondence, and other administrative records of San Diego Community Service, a social service agency focused on recreational activities for children in the San Diego Community in the 1920s.

This group received most of its funding from the Community Chest, and a majority of the members of the organization held their positions on a voluntary basis. They even employed a Drama Director, Alice Lee, to help promote drama and visual arts within the city school system The group did many projects in conjunction with the San Diego City Schools to help promote recreational activities for children. The Community Service group was involved with various associations and organizations throughout San Diego County that promoted activities for children within the community, including the San Diego City Schools. San Diego Community Service was a social service agency devoted primarily to promoting, organizing, and operating recreational and cultural activities for children in the San Diego community. He is survived by his wife of sixty four happy years, Lela Anna Wallace Smith of Summit two sons, Keith Smith (Joyce) of Summit and Kyle Smith of Summit one brother, Harold Smith of Summit four grandchildren, Brandy Smith Fredette, Jodi Jackson (Justin), Mindi Smith and Wallace Memphis Smith three great-grandchildren, Troy Fredette, Jamie Fredette and Luke Fredette with numerous nieces and nephews. Thomas is preceded in death by his parents one brother, Delroy Smith and one sister, Dorothy Smith. He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. He cherished his years as a coach for the Summit Dixie Youth Baseball program where he was able to mentor many of the young men that played ball. He was dedicated to his family and his legacy was that he lived his faith by giving to others. He was a loving husband, father, grand and great-grandfather. There he served as a deacon and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #0213 for over fifty years. Thomas was a retired General Car Foreman for the Illinois Central railroad and was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Summit.


He is the son of the late, Granberry and Minnie Johnson Smith.

Thomas was born on Septemin Lincoln County, MS. Glen Crane will officiate and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Summit, MS. Visitation will be Monday from 5 PM until 8 PM at Hartman-Jones Funeral Home of McComb with visitation again Tuesday from 9 AM until services at 11 AM at the funeral home. Thomas Memphis Smith, 83, of Summit, MS., passed away on Jat the Camellia Estates Center in McComb.
